It may not be Halloween yet, but get ready to start screaming your lungs out this February thanks to St. Vincent and a number of other horror directors.
XX is a four-part anthology from a mix of contemporary horror-genre directors. Roxanne Benjamin (V|H|S, Southbound) debuts a Sadako-like creature in Don’t Fall; Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation) conjures up a possession in Only Living Son; and Jovanka Vuckovic (former editor of the horror culture magazine Rue Morgue) plays on childhood innocence in The Box. The cast includes Natalie Brown, Melanie Lynskey, Breeda Wool and Christina Kirk.
The trailer only reveals a short preview of Birthday Party directed by Annie Clark (a.k.a. St. Vincent), but expect it to trigger memories of your childhood fear of birthday party mascots (looking at you, Ronald McDonald). St. Vincent’s music could also give us a clue for what to expect. If her smooth to rough transitions are anything to go by, don’t be fooled by the quirkiness of the preview: towards the end of the clip, we see a man’s legs exiting a doorway. We’ll have to wait another month to find out what that could mean. Scary.
