Playing pretend can be fun: whether playing someone else or becoming a different version of yourself. If this is something you’re interested in now that school’s out, Performance Lab has got just the thing.

Performance Lab is a multi-arts performance master class series, the first of its kind in the country. The workshop series will focus on theater and film acting. Various forms of storytelling such as improvisation, spoken word, scriptwriting, and creative movement will complement the acting classes.

Mentors include The Sandbox Collective’s Toff de Venecia, SPIT’s Kenneth Keng, and GMA’s Yan Yuzon, among other veterans of their respective fields. The participants will work alongside directors in bringing to life some of the greatest written pieces in film and theater. By the end of the master class series, students will be star in their very own web series, which serves as the culmination of the weeklong affair.

Everyone above 14 years old is welcome to participate, whether beginner or professional. “The myth of natural talent is strong in the industry. Some would even go so far as to say that in drama, ‘you’ve either got it, or you don’t,’” founder Alessandra Dalmas says. “However, the apparent transition of artists from unremarkable novices to celebrated masters have proven that this notion is exactly what it is — a myth.”

The master class series will take place from May 17 to 23 at the NCO Clubhouse, Philippine Army Officers’ Village, Lawton Avenue, Fort Bonifacio. With so many activities in store for such a short class, playing pretend will soon become even more fun. — Helene Enriquez
