For most, Ang Bandang Shirley is an institution in the local indie music scene. They’re a band that makes songs that speak directly to the heart; a band that gets yuppies and teens together to belt out their lyrics. They’re a crowd-favorite in music bars and major local festivals, and have always been THE band that you must watch with your crush. Di Na Babalik and Nakauwi Na are some of their songs that helped people in navigating the world of love and relationships, whether it was their first love or their first heartbreak.
After the release of their song Umaapaw, Ang Bandang Shirley has once again proved that they will always be the narrators of our love lives or lack thereof. They understand our emotions and use them to create sweet, melancholic music. Now, they’re back with a new single called Siberia and it’s going to make you believe in the power of love, in whatever form it takes.
The English translation of “Siberia” is flashed all throughout the video reiterating the band’s underlying message of love.
Directed and edited by Kathy Gener (who happens to be the band’s manager and the director of their other music videos for Tama Na ang Drama and Umaapaw), Siberia is a story of self-reflection; of a person who clings to hope and self-determination. At first what you hear is a voice that is as soothing as it is is torn. Vocalist Selena Salang sings with a coolness in her voice, “May darating na pag-ibig / sa wakas hindi kunwari / o binuo mo lang sa isip / o pinilit ang sarili.” In the video, we see a girl smiling and singing along, against a bokeh-filled city lights background. She continues to smile but the lyrics get darker, “Hindi ka malulungkot / walang tunay na nagtatapos / magkikita pang muli / sa ibang pagkakataon.”
Dwell a little longer on Siberia and you’ll realize that the love that they’re talking about extends beyond relationships and to self-love as well. The lyrics “pinili ang sarili / sumaya” wax on choosing one’s self.
The single and the video serve as previews of Ang Bandang Shirley’s upcoming third album which is slated for release sometime this 2017.
