The announcement of a designer collaboration with a retail brand usually means mass hysteria because of the affordable price points and limited quantities. But when Uniqlo announced its new collaboration with designer Alexander Wang, there was a very distinct echo: “Oh, it’s just underwear?” Yeah, my thoughts exactly.
However, when you actually think about it, the collection makes sense. There are bodysuits, tank tops, leggings and underwear, all in Uniqlo’s famed Heattech fabric, which keeps you warm while staying thin and lightweight. And because they aren’t bulky at all, the pieces are perfect for layering under your regular clothes when visiting colder climates. Christmas holiday with the fam, here we come.
I see London, I see France: The innerwear collection will make you want to bring back underwear as outerwear.
But here comes the question you’re probably asking: what’s the point of buying into a designer collaboration if you’re just going to hide it under your clothes? Well, just wear it on its own, duh. The Heattech will keep you warm enough for Manila’s cooler December weather, and if you’re going abroad, layer ’em together. The pieces carry a modern, streamlined ’80s cool that’s too good not to show off. They’re pretty understated for sure, but that just gives you some room to play around with it.
Unlike many designer collaborations, Uniqlo’s collection with Alexander Wang is priced very similarly to their usual stuff. Shorts are at P590, tank tops are P790, leggings and shirts at P990. The most expensive items (the ribbed sleeveless body suit and extra warm crew neck and tights) are at P1,490. Definitely tempting. Another thing that sets it apart from other designer collaborations: most of the collection is available across all Uniqlo stores. If you want a look at the complete collection, it’s available at SM Megamall and the Uniqlo Manila Global Flagship Store in Glorietta 5. Time to get down to your skivvies.
