Nike’s Google-powered creation marries basketball and technology in courts around the Metro.
We live in a new era of basketball where technology is at the core of the sport’s development. Data and analytics cover just about every aspect of the sport, from movement to form. The athletic youth of today need a push past the expected hustle in order to take them to the next level, especially for the kids for whom ball is life.
That’s where Nike and Google come in with the Hyper Court, which is the first ever on-court digital experience that unlocks exclusive HD basketball content without the need for data. Players just need to show up at any of the courts, located in different parts of the city with their gear and the Nike Hyper Court app on their phones. There and then, they can immediately access the different training drills, member events, and exclusive Nike content.
There are five courts spread out across the metro, each dedicated to five great modern NBA players, namely: Kobe Bryant, Russell Westbrook, Lebron James, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Within the app, players can choose which among the five icons they want to play with, and the training will cater to those specific skills. You could learn to drive ferociously like Westbrook, or unleash a hesi pull-up jumpshot the way KD does. Each player mural was designed and executed by internationally renowned artist and New York Times bestselling illustrator Arturo Torres.
Kiefer Ravena, former Ateneo Blue Eagle forward, is excited to see what’s next for the young ballers of Metro Manila. Personally, he’s a Kobe fan through and through, but he emphasized the importance of picking up a little from each of the five featured players as having a complete game is supremely important in mastering the game. Ravena, along with PBA superstars Jeff Chan, Jayson Castro, and LA Tenorio showcased the Hyper Court app in a training camp, coaching a set of talented youngsters using the training modules provided by Nike and Google.
These five courts seem few now, but the promise of providing unrestricted access to next level training can only mean scaling upwards in the future, reaching out to more and inspiring the kids to emulate their heroes. The Philippines, as a basketball loving nation, needs as much support as it can get in empowering and innovating the future of the sport and its players.
