Stronger than yesterday: These 90s sneaks are back with a modern twist

I’m going to be completely honest and say that when I think of Skechers, I think of a middle-aged man shopping in a department store. I’m going to be even more honest and say that that makes me want a pair even more. Like, who doesn’t wanna be a certified Dad? But come to think of it, maybe that’s the imagery that comes to mind because around 16 years ago, I was probably in a department store with my dad begging him for a pair of Skechers.

Skechers were the shoes to have. At least, for those of us who were faithful laypeople of the Church of Britney Spears, patron saint of sporty chic. Almost two decades after Britney first wore the Skechers D’Lites, the OG of chunky monkey footwear is back with a modern twist.

Following successful launches in Asian countries like Korea, Japan, China, and Hong Kong, Skechers and The Nines are bringing the D’Lites 2 Sweet Monster line to the Philippines by way of their Retro Renegade campaign — two words that embody our generation quite nicely. “Retro,” because we’re suckers for nostalgia, and “Renegade” because well, we all just wanna go against the grain, don’t we? (Guilty, and guilty.)

Almost two decades after Britney first wore the Skechers D’Lites, the OG of chunky monkey footwear is back with a modern twist.

According to Skechers x The Nines, Retro Renegade is all about the fearless woman. Someone who is unapologetic about who she is. Someone who isn’t afraid to be — by society’s unrealistic beauty standards, anyway — ugly. WOW, all that badassery coupled with a memory foam insole? Girl, these shoes were born to make you happy.

The D’Lites 2 Sweet Monsters come in two designs: a gray/black one if you’re that kid on the playground who wins every game of koosh ball, or a pink/white one if you have a lock diary that you write in with your pink feather pen. Needless to say, it covers all bases because you were either one or the other.

It’s ironic because the D’Lites were the shoes to wear 20 years ago, and now they embody what not to wear — which just makes us want to wear them more. I’m so confused by our generation! Does this mean ugly is the new black? *Simon Cowell voice* It’s a yes from me.

The Skechers D’Lites 2 Sweet Monster will be exclusively sold at The Nines, both online at www.thenines.ph and at their store at Uptown Mall, BGC. They launch during the latter half of May, so keep an eye out! For more info, you can check out The Nines on Instagram or on Facebook.
