Almˆhi (Bruno Ganz) mit Heidi (Anuk Steffens) und Clara (Isabelle Ottmann) auf dem Weg zur H¸tte

The country’s first ever Swiss Film Festival is happening — and it’s totally free.

Shangri-La Plaza is hosting the festivities at their Cineplex in partnership with the Embassy of Switzerland over the course of two weekends. Whether you’re 8, 18, or 80, there’s no doubt you’ll have a good time.

The lineup includes three family-friendly films with a lot of humor and heart to go around:

Heidi (2015)

You may remember Heidi as a book from your childhood or a Studio Ghibli-esque anime you’d sit and watch every morning, about a young can-do orphan girl living with her grandfather in the Alps who is then whisked away to Frankfurt to serve as a companion to the wheelchair-bound Clara. In 2015, a live-action film adaptation was released, and it’s still as charming as ever.

Mein Name ist Eugen/Rascals on the Road (2005)

Based on a children’s book by Swiss author Klaus Schädelin, Rascals on the Road tells the story of four children (the “rascals”) from the point of view 12-year-old Eugen, detailing their quest for long-lost treasure and to follow in the footsteps of “the biggest rascal of all time,” Fritzli Bühler.

Vitus (2006)

The title character is a genius and piano prodigy whose well-meaning parents end up suffocating him with their ambition. In his desire to live an ordinary life, with the help of his eccentric frustrated-pilot grandfather, Vitus rebels and decides to figure out what kind of life he wants — to utterly surprising, at times laugh-out-loud, and always brilliant results.

The Swiss Film Festival will be held from April 28 to 30 and May 5 to 7 at Cinema 4 of the Shangri-La Plaza Cineplex. Entry to the cinema is on a first come, first served basis. For schedules and more information, visit Shangri-La Plaza on Facebook.
