Illustrator Keeshia Felipe’s collab with Lazy Oaf is a kawaii girl dream

It’s every artist’s dream come true to be recognized by their creative idols, and Bulacan-based illustrator Keeshia Felipe knows that feeling all too well.

As a local artist who earned quite a following for her kawaii illustrations of cool girls in trendy clothes, Keeshia (known to her followers as Kita, or Keeshuu) shares that everything kind of just began as a hobby. She began drawing her signature cool girls because of her fascination for women who can dress well. “(It’s) kind of a frustration as I don’t have the courage to wear fancy clothes, so I just draw them on girls,” says Keeshia, who is also a regular at the Cubao Expo zine scene as a member of Local Loca.

That fascination, as it turns out, paid off. Gemma Shiel, founder of London-based fashion label Lazy Oaf, saw Keeshia’s illustrations of girls wearing her brand’s clothes on Instagram, and got in touch with her about a possible collaboration soon after. Keeshia shares that Gemma gave her several mood boards to start with, but other than that, they gave her enough freedom to do what she wanted with the collection but with the added Lazy Oaf flavor.

Think pink: London-based brand Lazy Oaf saw Keesha’s illustrations of girls wearing pieces from the brand and reached out to her for a capsule collection collaboration.

The Kita x Lazy capsule collection was launched locally at Hoodwink SM Aura last Aug. 11, with pieces including workwear jackets and pants, turtlenecks, totes and T-shirts printed with Keeshia’s signature illustrations (but, ironically, wearing less clothing this time).

Keeshia mentions that this is because she looked to vintage pin-up models and various Japanese brand lookbook catalogs for inspiration.

“I guess (my art style) evolved in the sense that it is more clear to me what style I like to draw and who to work with in the future,” she adds when asked how she’s grown as an artist.

As for what’s next, Keeshia plans to keep doing commissions and selling her own merch. But now, she’s got even bigger dreams: “I’ve said it many times before, and to this day I dream about working with Tyler, the Creator for one big collection!”
